Synopsis: Chocolat is a story about a small French village that is transformed when a mother and daughter arrive with the north wind to open a chocolate shop. The village is filled with several residents who are bitter, unfriendly and afraid of change. A striking Juliette Binoche plays Vianne, who awakens the villagers' senses through the magical powers of her chocolate. Binoche's character begins to entice the community through her concoctions and her friendly approach to the fellow villagers. Slowly the woman and the chocolate begin to heal and rejuvenate the community. The changes seem to relax everyone, except for the count who tries everything in his power to undermine the chocolatier. Things get worse when a group of Irish wanderers arrive by boat. When Vianne befriends the Irish travelers the count vows to destroy them both. His plans fail and even he begins to indulge in the chocolate. After this, the town settles into a lively community, holding carnivals and becoming more open to new ideas. Soon the north wind returns and Vianne is ready to move on, but she settles on staying in one place for the sake of her daughter. Chocolat is a sweet story with many lessons, played out in a beautiful setting that leaves you feeling hungry, yet satisfied.

"Crowe was not being rewarded for his performance in Gladiator, but rather his LAC, Insider, and Gladiator put together. Tom Hanks is going to win the oscar next year for Road to Perdition, Sam Mendez is no fluke. If you wanna whine about something winning that didn't deserve it, complain about Gladiator for best picture. Traffic wins oscars for directing, screenplay, and editing, not to mention del toro's for supporting actor and the SAG award for best ensemble. Why vote for Gladiator over Traffic when it wins the other awards? "
