Character Bio: Laura Linney plays Sammy, a single mother living in her deceased parents home in the small town where she grew up. Sammy seems to have her life in perfect order until her irresponsible, emotional-draining brother returns home asking for money. Linney starts out the movie as a person who is content with her controlled life, but when her brother begins to form a strong bond with her son it forces them both to come to terms and grow. Together, Sammy and her brother come to an understanding that reinvents their relationship with the only family they have -- each other. Linney begins to break Sammy out of the dormant controller into a person willing to rock the boat a bit. This movie is a strong vehicle that showcases Linney's acting ability. This nomination serves as another opportunity to share her talent on the big screen with a larger audience.

"Crowe was not being rewarded for his performance in Gladiator, but rather his LAC, Insider, and Gladiator put together. Tom Hanks is going to win the oscar next year for Road to Perdition, Sam Mendez is no fluke. If you wanna whine about something winning that didn't deserve it, complain about Gladiator for best picture. Traffic wins oscars for directing, screenplay, and editing, not to mention del toro's for supporting actor and the SAG award for best ensemble. Why vote for Gladiator over Traffic when it wins the other awards? "
