Character Bio: Joan Allen's portrayal of Sen. Laine Hanson, a politician attacked during confirmation hearings for past indiscretions, brings her a third Oscar nomination. Hanson is nominated to replace a deceased vice president and become the first woman in the office, but meet opposition on almost all fronts along the way. She is also the victim of character assassination, with shocking pieces of her past including a racy college escapade -- being brought to light. She vehemently defends her right to privacy and states that whatever may have happened in her past, it's not the country's business and doesn't have anything to do with being vice president. Allen brings to life a woman with unshakeable principals who firmly believes that her personal life should not become part of her public life.
