Character Bio: Russell Crowe had nothing to lose when he took on the role of Maximus in "Gladiator." The movie showcases Crowe's talent as his character changes throughout the film. The audience first sees a successful, yet humble general and hard working husband and father, but his life quickly shifts when death and betrayal enslaves him. Crowe must fight to survive, to return to his life and to gain his revenge. Crowe varies his role and really lets the audiences see the changes in his character; he even reshapes his body for the role. His portrayal of Maximus shows a gritty and raw view of sport violence and its toll on the gladiators. With Crowe having taken on such a wide variety of strong and diverse roles, Academy members have no choice but to stop and take notice.
